Sterhuis, meaning 'star house,' got its name because the light of the house was mistaken as a star back in the 17th century, but these days the name is just as relevant for another reason – the quality wines made by owner and winemaker, Johan Kruger. Taking a natural approach to winemaking, Kruger farms using biodynamic methods to ensure the farm soils are healthy and the indigenous plants and insects live amongst the vines in a fully-functioning ecosystem. This reduces the need for spraying insect killers and other things that can harm the vines. Wines are made with minimal intervention in the cellar, left to do their own thing and represent their true character.
This Sterhuis Methode Cap Classique is made entirely from Chardonnay, and showcases the fruit quality, grapes coming from 20-year old vines on the farm. Fermented and left for over six months in French barrels before secondary fermentation in the bottle, it then sits another two years in the cellar. It sports a fresh, lively palate with plenty of citrus fruits flavours and a firm mineral finish.
Brendon's thoughts: A beautiful sparkling wine for a beautiful time of year, it should be enjoyed with friends and family in the sunshine.
Jean's thoughts: Crispy, clean and light, this bubbly with a few oysters is a good way to start the summer!
