Idiom wines are run by the Bottega family, who are based in the Cape but have strong Italian roots. Naturally their wine estate on the hills near Sir Lowry's Pass is planted with some Italian varietals, things like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera. The family produce some superb wines from these as well as more traditional varietals, and they're all well worth seeking out.
We're particularly impressed with the Zinfandel, which might not ring as an Italian varietal, but it's identical to what the Italians call Primitivo. It's renowned for typically ripe raspberry and cherry flavours, making a rich yet easily drinkable style of wine. The Idiom Zinfandel combines these flavours with some unique fynbos and rosemary notes and firm tannins giving it good weight. The kind of character that makes for a delicious drinking wine but also an exciting one with regards to food pairing. Try it with some game dishes or herb-rubbed meats to make the most of it.
Brendon's thoughts: You say Zinfandel, I say Primitivo. Whichever way you say it, this is an unusual variety but one that's well suited to South Africa because of our love for game meat!
Jean's thoughts: A big wine, full of flavor, ripe grapes but very elegant on the palate. An ideal wine for any kind of game meat or stew. Winter is nearly gone but a wine for all year long.
