Pinotage is the subject of much debate. There are those that consider it South Africa's signature variety, and those that see it as a burden we should ignore. Whichever side of the table you're on, it makes for interesting discussion, but you can't ignore the quality Pinotage that's on the market. Southern Right certainly makes one of the best.
Part of the Hamilton Russell wine empire (in addition to Hamilton Russell and Ashbourne), Southern Right was a label created with the idea of doing this maligned grape justice. Seeing as it's a late-ripening varietal, Anthony Hamilton Russell believed it would do well in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and he was correct. This vintage has had a few years to age, and drinks beautifully. The fruit is still concentrated but the tannins are soft, with a gentle spice on the finish. Crack a bottle the next time the Pinotage debate comes up.
Brendon's thoughts: An elegant, classic and delicious red wine, it sends Pinotage detractors running with their tail between their legs.
Marc's thoughts: A thoroughbred wine this, from a pioneering estate. Packed with fruit flavour, subtle oak nuances and good structure - and consistent every vintage.
